The Kentucky DerbyThis entry was posted on 5/6/2007 8:41 AM and is filed under Lucky. Did you watch the Kentucky Derby yesterday? I did. There are only three horse races I ever watch and honestly I missed the Kentucky Derby last year. I don't remember why and don't want to. This year I got home from work and drank 3 vodka martini's while watching the pomp and circumstance of the pre race activities. I do like to see the the profiles of the horses, owners and jockeys. Mostly I like to just look and the horse and pick the ones I think will do well.
One year I was watching TV and the second I saw Thunder Gulch I picked him to win it. He looked like he was full of fight and wanted to not just win but beat down every other horse out there. He did exactly that. Then in the next triple crown race he did it again. I was think to myself then he was going to win the triple crown but it wasn't meant to be. He was injured and the owner not wanting to chance it pulled him from the last race. The right thing to do, but if he hadn't had the hairline fracture, or what ever it was, I'm almost positive he would have won it all. This year I was watching the horses as they were being paraded to the gate and was making my picks. The first horse to get my attention was Street Sense, and his number was 7. He acted excited and ready to go AND he had a lucky number. I also picked two other horses (just by the way they acted) to see if I could pick a top three. The other two horses I picked were Hard Spun and Great Hunter. The reason I picked Great Hunter is for two reasons, in my favorite movie The Quiet Man, John Wayne rides a black hunter and I know it's dumb but I like hunting. Hey, it's just a horse race. When the race started all the horses jumped out and right away things looked bad for Street Sense. He was next to last. He was in the back but made his move along the rail and passed all those other horses like they were dragging boat anchors behind them. It was awesome seeing all the dirt on the horse and rider at the end of the race. A testament to the effort made to win the Kentucky Derby. My second pick finished second and my third finished in 13th position. Too bad I didn't have a wager on that one. Congratulations to Street Sense, Calvin Borel (jockey), Carl Nafzger (trainer) and the owner, James Tafel. |
